KCC DENIM DAY

Unite with us and in solidarity on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 for Denim Day

A History of Denim Day:

The inception of Denim Day follows the results of a high profile Italian sexual assault case. In 1992, an 18 year-old girl was brought to an isolated area during a driving lesson by her 45 year-old instructor. He pulled her out of the car, removed her jeans, raped her, and threatened to end her life if she told.

This teen girl did find the strength to report her assault and her offender was convicted but her justice was later repealed by the Italian Supreme Court. The argument validating the release of her rapist: “The Jeans Alibi”. Because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, classifying this violent crime as consensual sex.

Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Since then, the movement has grown internationally, occurring on the last Wednesday of April as an act of solidarity.
