Please join us for an eventful day full of LGBTQ Hawaiian culture and awareness. This day is dedicated to educating our service providers on Kaua’i about LGBTQ issues within our community.

Dr. Bob Bidwell will start the day with a basic LGBTQ 101, what it means to be LGBTQ in Hawai’i and the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity. Following Dr. Bidwell, representatives from Life Foundation on Oahu will do a Transgender Cultural Competency presentation. The topics are basic Transgender 101, history of Mahu, Hawai’i LGBTQ culture, and appropriate language in addressing members of the LGBTQ community.

After lunch, Bidwell will return to talk a little bit about LGBTQ in the judicial system, and the work that he has been doing with the LGBTQ youth on Oahu. Finishing up the conference is Kumu Hina who will talk about Hawaiian Leadership, “A Place in the Middle” – her story, her transition, and finding a place of acceptance and belonging in our communities. Lastly, Kumu Hina will make a connection between LGBTQ Hawai’i today and historically in Hawaiian culture and how LGBTQ has always had a place in Hawaii.

Throughout the day, all presenters will also touch on topics that relate to violence within and against the LGBTQ community, the lack of reporting by LGBTQ people, and how we can all communicate more efficiently and work together to better serve our LGBTQ population and larger Hawai’i community.

We look forward to sharing this day with our Kaua’i community.
